Helping Make the Season Bright

TECO helped brighten the spirits of children and teens at Texas Children’s Hospital in December 2016 by delivering 114 toys and gifts donated by TECO employees.

The toy and gift drive began just before Thanksgiving and concluded in mid-December with a special delivery to the hospital.

It was TECO’s second annual drive. Last year, 120 toys and gifts were collected for patients at Shriner’s Hospital for Children; TECO’s other hospital customers are in the queue to receive the annual donations over the next seven years!

The drive is open to TECO employees and contractors at our plant. We kick off the drive the week before Thanksgiving and post flyers to promote the drive throughout our plant.

To make giving easy, we place gift-wrapped moving boxes in our training room so employees and contractors can drop off their donations according to age groups (babies and toddlers, boys 5-12, girls 5-12, and teens). Some also donate cash, which we use to purchase gifts in the most-needed categories.

TECO’s annual goal has been 100 toys and gifts, and each year we’ve surpassed our target. We send an weekly email to employees to report the drive’s progress. It concludes at TECO’s Christmas breakfast where we announce how many items have been donated and give our employees an additional day to help us meet or exceed our goal.

“Our employees have really enjoyed the drive,” says Karen Thomas, executive assistant and co-coordinator of the drive. “You can really see the child come out in them as they make their donations and look at the donations that have been made.”

TECO thanks Karen, Phillip Gonzales, Katie Swinson, Jenice Ricks, Faustino Quiroz, Heleva Bacchus and Justin Underwood who helped make the drive a success.

We plan to continue the tradition annually to help brighten the spirits of children and teens who find themselves in the hospital during such a special time of year.
